Ignition Lock Replacement in Austin, TX: When the Key Will Not Turn
If your key needs force to turn, stop forcing it. It could be the key, the cylinder, dirt inside the lock, or the steering lock holding pressure against it, and every extra shove turns a small job into a bigger one. This is work we do every week across Austin, and we do it at your vehicle.
We repair the cylinder where we can. Dirt in the lock, a wafer out of line, or a spring that has gone soft can often be put right without replacing the assembly, and the car keeps its original cylinder. Ignition lock replacement is the answer when the cylinder is cracked, corroded, or worn so far that no key will line up the wafers. Either way, the technician tells you which one you are looking at and what it costs before anything comes apart.
We come to you anywhere in Austin and the surrounding areas. Tell us the vehicle when you call so we can check parts for it before a technician sets off.

Ignition Trouble in Austin, TX?
If the key needs force, sticks, or behaves differently from one start to the next, have it looked at while it is still starting. Call with the year, make and model so we can check service and parts for your vehicle.
Ignition Cylinder Replacement in Austin, TX: Key Stuck or Turning Hard
A key that sticks, turns hard, or will not come out after you park is one of the most common ignition calls we take. Usually the cylinder is worn, though a worn key, pressure from the steering lock, or an automatic that is not fully in Park will do the same thing. We repair worn cylinders, replace the ones that are past saving, and check the key at the same time so you are not paying for a cylinder you did not need.
Two things to try before you call. If the steering wheel is under pressure the steering lock is gripping the cylinder and no key will turn it, so ease the wheel and try again without forcing anything. And if the car is an automatic and the shifter is not fully in Park, some vehicles will not release the key at all.
If the cylinder does need replacing, there is a choice to make. Depending on the vehicle, the new cylinder either comes with its own keys or can be set up to work with the key you already carry. The technician will tell you which one your car allows before it goes in.
Ignition Switch Repair in Austin, TX: Key Turns but the Car Will Not Start
If the key turns like normal and the car still will not start, the trouble has moved past the cylinder. Usually that is the ignition switch, and we test and replace ignition switches in Austin at the vehicle. The battery, the starter and the Park interlock look identical from the driver’s seat, so we rule those out before we sell you a switch.
On most vehicles the switch is a separate part and comes out without replacing the cylinder. Most people assume the whole ignition has to go. Testing tells you which job you are actually paying for.
If the engine cranks but will not fire, the lock is usually not your problem. Tell us what the dash does and whether it starts and then dies, and we will tell you honestly whether you need us or a mechanic.
- Points to the mechanical side — key will not turn, needs force, sticks, or will not come out
- Points to the electrical side — key turns and the dash stays dark, or the engine stops as the key springs back
Broken Key Extraction in Austin, TX: Key Snapped in the Ignition
A key usually breaks for one of two reasons, and sometimes both. Either the key was worn, bent or already cracked, or the lock had gone stiff enough that the key was taking the strain. We look at both once the piece is out, because if the cylinder caused it, the new key will go the same way.
A piece stuck in a door lock is usually easier to reach than one sitting deep in an ignition, where it can sit well past the wafers with the steering lock still under pressure. We take them out of both, and we check the lock afterwards.
Before we get there, do not force the ignition, do not wrestle the steering wheel, and do not push your spare in behind the broken piece. Keep the half on your keyring, because its profile and the cuts left on it help us identify the right blank and rebuild the original pattern.
Once the piece is out we will tell you whether the cylinder can be saved or needs replacing. Cutting and programming the new key is covered on our car key replacement page in Austin.

Frequently Asked Questions
If my key breaks inside the ignition, does the cylinder have to be replaced?
Not necessarily. The broken piece is first removed so the cylinder can be inspected. If the key broke because it was worn or cracked and the cylinder still works properly, extraction may be all that is needed. If the cylinder is stiff, worn or damaged, it may need repair or replacement.
Why does my ignition key only turn when I wiggle it?
The key may be worn, the parts inside the cylinder may no longer be aligning correctly, or pressure from the steering wheel may be holding the lock. Do not keep forcing the key. The key and cylinder should be checked separately to identify the cause.
Can you replace the ignition cylinder and let me keep my existing key?
On many vehicles, yes. Some replacement cylinders can be set to work with your existing key, while others come with a separate key. The technician will check what your vehicle supports before replacing the cylinder.
Will ignition repair affect my immobilizer, remote or push-to-start system?
Usually not. Replacing or repairing the mechanical cylinder does not normally erase the keys stored by the vehicle. Some models connect the cylinder, transponder reader and steering lock differently, so the technician will check whether any programming or relearning is required.
The key turns and the engine cranks, but the car will not start. Is the ignition cylinder causing it?
Probably not. If the engine cranks, the lock cylinder has turned far enough to request a start. The problem could involve the immobilizer, battery, ignition switch, fuel system or another component. Tell us what the dashboard does and whether the engine cranks, starts briefly or does nothing so we can determine whether you need a locksmith or a mechanic.
Can you repair my ignition where my vehicle is parked in Austin, TX?
Yes, when we support the vehicle and the required repair. Call with the year, make, model and symptoms so we can confirm service and parts availability before a technician is on the way.
