What to Do if You’re Locked Out of Your Office

It happens to everyone sooner or later. You arrive bright and early at your office, ready to start the day…only to realize that you’re locked out. Time is money, and an inability to open on time could cost you significant revenue and even cause you to lose some customer goodwill. So what can you do if you’re locked out of your office?

Locked Out of Office

Use Your Spare Key

If you’ve thought ahead, you might have a spare office key in your purse, wallet, or car. Use the spare to open the office, and then immediately put it back for safekeeping. The last thing you want is to lose the spare key or lock it in the office!

Ask for Help

Do you have a supervisor, coworker, or employee with a key to the office? If so, start making phone calls. You might need to go pick up the key if it’s that person’s day off, but with any luck you can gain access to the office soon. If you are the only keyholder, consider designating someone to carry a key in the future. If you own the business, you could even decide to give a spare key to your spouse, adult child, or trusted friend.

Look for an Alternate Entry

Check the back door and the windows to see if something was left unlocked. Breaking into your own office may not seem very businesslike, but it can be a good way to get inside quickly. Of course, if you find a way in, a would-be thief might find it as well, so be sure to secure that entry point after you use it.

Call a Trusted Locksmith

If you have no other way to get into your office, call a trusted local locksmith. He or she can easily gain entry to your office and make you a new key if needed. This is also a great time to review your office’s overall security and schedule any upgrades that you might need.

Being locked out of your office is annoying at best. At worst, it could cost you greatly in loss of both revenue and goodwill from customers who would like to come inside and make a purchase. It is best to plan ahead by carrying a spare key and also designating a keyholder who lives nearby. If you do find yourself locked out, though, having a local locksmith that you can trust on standby can help you quickly gain entry and get back to work.
