Are you supposed to tip a locksmith? And if so, how much do you tip a locksmith? Do you tip them for any and all services, or just when they show up to get out of a jam?

These questions are very common, especially when it comes to utilizing locksmith services for the first time. Here’s what’s appropriate when it comes to tipping for locksmith services.

Is it Customary to Tip a Locksmith?

If you call a locksmith for a service, whether you’re locked out of the house or you need a new set of keys for your car, tipping is not really expected. Locksmiths set their prices based on what they require to perform a service without a tip factored in. Unlike a server in a restaurant for whom tips are a necessary and expected part of their pay, locksmith’s pay scale is based on the fact that most customers don’t tip them for their services.

When is it Appropriate to Tip a Locksmith?

Just because it isn’t customary to tip a locksmith doesn’t mean you can’t do so if you feel inclined. Many customers consider tipping their locksmith if they respond to an emergency and get them out of a difficult situation. Customers may also tip if a locksmith comes out in bad weather to perform a service. If you have to call a locksmith on a holiday it may be nice to tip them for their services. You may also feel led to tip a locksmith for particularly excellent service.

What Percentage Should I Tip a Locksmith?

How much do you tip a locksmith? If you decide to do so, the usual rate would be 15%-20% of the total bill, which is customary for most services. Of course you can tip more or less depending on the quality of service, the difficulty and time frame of the job, or other criteria. There is no set amount because locksmiths are already paid sufficiently for their work before tips.

What Happens if I Don’t Tip a Locksmith?

Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. The locksmith won’t be upset or look down on a customer for not tipping, because they don’t usually expect it. You’ll get the same quality of service you would have received otherwise, because a locksmith wants your repeat business. So don’t feel obligated to tip.

What Happens if I Do Tip?

The locksmith will likely be very appreciative of the tip they receive. They will probably leave the job with a smile on their face. They may even provide faster, better service if you ever require locksmith services again.
